What's in the box: A gift wrapped book chosen to match the reader's stated tastes, from fiction, non fiction or children's titles.

The Willoughby Book Club has closed and its website no longer loads, so you can no longer order from it. When it was running, it was a British book subscription built around personal selection. Instead of sending every member the same title, it picked books to suit each reader, based on the genres and tastes they described when signing up. Each book arrived gift wrapped, which made it a popular present, and you could buy a subscription for yourself or as a gift for someone else. It covered a broad mix of reading, including fiction, non fiction and books for children. The appeal was the small surprise of a wrapped parcel, with a choice meant to fit the reader rather than a general bestseller list. The weakness of this kind of service is that you give up control over what arrives, and a book that misses the mark can feel like wasted money. Because the service is no longer operating, we would not suggest signing up or paying through any old links or third party pages that still mention it. If you hold an unused gift subscription, contact your card provider or the place you bought it. If you want something similar, look at other UK book subscriptions that are still trading.
