What's in the box: A seasonal mix of organic vegetables and/or fruit, mostly British grown, that changes each week with the harvest.
Riverford is one of the best known names in British organic food. Farmer Guy Singh-Watson started it in Devon in 1987, delivering veg boxes to a few local homes, and it has been employee owned since 2018. Everything it sells is certified organic. The core product is a weekly or fortnightly box of seasonal vegetables, with fruit boxes and mixed fruit and veg boxes alongside. Contents change from week to week depending on what is being harvested, so you will see plenty of roots and brassicas in winter and more salad and soft produce in summer. Much of it is grown on Riverford's own farms or by partner growers, and the company is known for refusing to air freight produce. On top of the boxes you can order extras such as dairy, meat, bread, store cupboard goods and recipe kits. Boxes come in home compostable packaging, and an app and online account let you skip deliveries or change your order. Customer reviews generally praise the freshness and reliable delivery. The main drawback is that you get less choice than at a supermarket, and in the lean months the selection can feel repetitive. Organic produce also usually costs more than conventional, so check current box prices against your budget before signing up.
